August Home Maintenance

Each month I try to give you tips and tricks to keep on your home maintenance. Doing things each month of the years seems to make it less overwhelming. Let me know how it goes this month!

Do these simple tasks to stay on top of your home and to help minimize needs for fixing items sooner than needed.

Clean Up You Pantry

This is a task all of us hate doing. Maybe it’s because we don’t like to see the expired food we haven’t used, or maybe it’s because it’s a daunting task. Take the time this month to go through you pantry and clean things up. This is helpful before school starts and also to prep for things you’ll need in the cooler fall weather for things like soups and crockpot meals! It is helpful to write the date in permanent market larger on the cans to make sure you are using them before their expiration date. (I also do this with not as often used items in my fridge). When you’re done, you’ll feel super accomplished after this one!

Backup Your Phone & Organize Your Family Photos

This one is one that I always forget to do, and I’ll be honest intimidates me to some extent. I just recently acquired iCloud backup as I used to backup my phone to the computer and then backup the photos to a hard drive. One of my clients suggested another auto backup for the hard drive that I’ve been looking into. The other thing I’ve implemented (granted a bit poorly), is going through photos in the evening to get rid of any that aren’t keepers. This way it minimizes how overwhelmed you are when you do this backup.

Clean & Sanitize Carpets and Floors

It’s been a summer… a hot and crazy summer. We all run in and out with bare feet, which brings in the dirt and grime from outside. Before the chilly weather starts to set in, take the time to get your carpets cleaned (or do it yourself like I do) from the summer of fun. Do the same and give your floors a deep cleaning too with some hot water to get all the grime and dust up. This way, you’ll be entering into fall weather and flu/cold season with a fully clean home.

Get Organized for Back To School

Is it just me, or do you love to go back to school shopping? I enjoy the time of thinking about how my kiddos will grow in the coming year and getting them ready for a new classroom. This year I purchased everything and have it ready to go on the dining table to be labeled and put into backpacks before school starts. Take the time to do this.a few days before hand and go through the backpacks with your younger kiddos to make sure they know what they have.

Organize Closets

I just did this a few weeks ago as part of my back to school prep. Things with holes it in went to the trash. Shirts that could go from one kid to the next moved closets. Then I analyzed what was needed so that I can watch for sales this time of year for the clothing that my kids needed now. I also buy on clearance for items that they will need for next summer, like a new sun-shirt, shorts, etc. While this task takes time, it also preps me before we head back to school and before the weather changes to make sure that I’m not missing anything for these littles. Socks tend to be my lost problem. In my own closet, I try to do the same. Has a hole, get rid of it (I don’t need more “housework shirts). I tend to turn my hangers backwards and if I see that I didn’t wear something for the season I analyze will this be something that I’ll wear next year, or is it something I can part with. Decluttering this part of my world seems to help my whole family a bit more.

Clean and Organize the Garage

This is a task that I tend to do in August or September after the kids go back to school! Getting things thrown out that are empty, broken or just simply not used clears up space as the fall season comes up. Get rid of the empty stuff and get it cleaned out.

Clean and Maintain Bathroom Vent Fans

This one is quick! Grab the duster and get them cleaned up.

Clean Range Hood and Vent Fan

Also a quick one - it may need a quick soak in vinegar!

Have any other items that you would love to see me add to these monthly lists that you do at your home, shoot me a message and let me know!
